If you want to keep your air conditioning unit running efficiently, make sure you replace or clean the air filter once a month. Check the owner’s manual on the a/c for instructions on how to clean the filter. Never run the unit when the filter is removed and let the filter dry before reinstallling it.

When seeking a new contractor, ask loved ones for referrals. They’ll often have already had someone in for similar work and will know who to trust and who to avoid. If your family hasn’t used anyone, ask co-workers or other people you trust in your community for some references.

Clean the fan blades and coils in your condenser each spring. Turn the power off so nothing moves. Take the grill off and pull the blades out to clean them.

When you have an outdoor unit, be sure to keep all plants, flowers, shrubs and trees at least two feet from it. Anything that grows inside it, either above the ground or even roots beneath the soil, can block it up and cause it to break. Give it some breathing room.

If your fan condenser has oil ports, you must lubricate it once per year. A rubber or metal cap is typically placed over such ports. Pick a type of SAE 20 oil that is non-detergent and lightweight. Place 10 or less drops into every port to avoid overfilling.

Ask for references and be sure to call them as well. You are dealing with a high ticket item here, so you’ll want to do your due diligence to make sure you are getting the best for your money. Ask for references, but don’t stop there. Call each reference to check. A lot of people don’t take that important last step.

Be sure to check your evaporator coil drains frequently when your air conditioner is running. If this tube backs up, you can find water damage to your walls, ceilings and floors. If you end up with mold just use a solution of bleach and water to clean out the tube.

Shut off the air conditioning if nobody is home. By raising the temperature from, for example 78 to 80, your house will be warmer, but only up to 80 before your AC kicks in. If you decide to set the temperature to 82 or 83 or so on, your AC won’t go on until it reaches that temperature. It will use more electricity if you keep it running.

After reading the above article, you should now know that your HVAC system should be properly maintained. If you let it go, you will only end up with major problems in the future. The last thing you want is to come home one day and realize you have no air coming through your vents. To prevent this from happening, study the tips that you just read to ensure the HVAC in your home lasts a very long time.
